I am back to rebuilding these again. I finished my stock and the aftermarket options are also NLA. Interestingly out of the 4-5 brands only 2 brands were using part number 1315563 the others were using 1315559. Water pump design started life as part number 11511315563 to E34M5 3.6 version. When BMW introduced the S38-B38 they re-designed the pump, part number 11511315559. When the part number 1315559 S38-B38 was introduced, the 1315563 S38-B36 became the Hot-Climate version. The differences in the design is the Impeller fin/design combined with the pump pulley size. (See pics below for comparison)
Pulley part number 11511315201 is 112mm for S38B38.
Pulley part number 11511315202 is 102mm for S38B36.
Using pump part number 1315559 (S38B38) with E34M5 S38-B36 pump pulley part number 1315202 which is 102mm it improves cooling rotational efficiency. This applies for E34M5 S38-B38 owners. Conclusion: The S38B38 set up runs hotter than the S38B36 due to the 112mm pulley and why on every S38B38 I upgrade the pulley to S38-B36. In this rebuild I use Factory parts. The most important part is the slip-seal. The aftermarket pumps are using cheap rubber slip-seal which degrades and cracks in a short period and the coolant/water gets into the bearing and destroys it. I have aftermarket brand GMB leak coolant after a ~5k miles...from the slip-seal. I took the GMB apart to investigate and up on inspection the rubber was cracked and did not seal properly. The process of rebuilding the pump is very tedious and difficult if one is after long lasting water pump interval. It seems very easy to press out and press in. Believe me, I am not trying to make this "Magic" as most people would think but one need to understand how it works. I made custom tooling for the assembling process. Price $485
